1、 Inappropriate measurement method
Not tightening the tape measure: When measuring long distances, if the tape measure is not straightened and left to bend or loosen, it can result in measurement results that are longer than the actual length, especially when using fiber tape measures.
Inaccurate measurement angle: The tape measure should be kept in the same horizontal or vertical direction as the object being measured for measurement. If the measurement angle is tilted, it will cause deviation in the measurement results. For example, when measuring the height of a wall, if the tape measure is tilted against the wall, the measured value will be lower than the actual height.
2、 Misconceptions about accuracy
It is believed that the accuracy of all tape measures is the same: the accuracy of tape measures of different types and brands may vary. Steel tape measures usually have higher accuracy than fiber tape measures, but even the same type of tape measure may have different accuracy levels due to differences in quality. For example, low-quality steel tape measures may experience problems such as scale wear and deformation after long-term use, which can affect measurement accuracy.
Ignore the influence of temperature on the tape measure: the length of the tape measure will undergo slight changes with temperature. In high-precision measurement, if temperature factors are not considered, it may lead to measurement errors. For example, in hot summers and cold winters, the length of a steel tape measure may vary.
3、 Neglecting the maintenance of the tape measure
Unclean tape measure: If the surface of the tape measure is covered with dust, oil, and other impurities, it will affect the clarity of the scale and result in inaccurate readings. Meanwhile, impurities may enter the internal structure of the tape measure, affecting its normal use.
Random storage: If the tape measure is casually discarded after use, it may be subjected to external forces such as compression and collision, resulting in deformation of the tape measure and damage to the tape cover. Especially when placing the tape measure in a damp environment, it is easy to rust the tape measure, affecting its service life and measurement accuracy.
4、 Incorrect interpretation of scale
Misreading the minimum scale: The tape measure usually has scales such as centimeters and millimeters. If the minimum scale is not carefully distinguished when reading the measurement results, it may lead to reading errors. For example, misreading millimeter scales as centimeter scales can result in a difference of 10 times in measurement results.
Neglecting scale wear: Long term use of tape measures may result in scale wear. If inspection is not taken carefully and readings are still taken according to the worn scale, significant measurement errors may occur.
